Moderna — Enterprise Design System Support

I was contracted to support the ongoing improvement of Moderna’s large-scale design system. My role focused on refining visual consistency, enhancing UI components, and supporting scalability across a complex, enterprise-level product ecosystem.

Problem
Moderna operates with a large and highly complex design system supporting multiple digital products and teams. As the system evolved, there was a need to improve consistency, component clarity, and visual alignment across interfaces while maintaining scalability and accessibility standards.

Goals
• Improve visual consistency across an extensive component library
• Refine UI components and their interaction states
• Support scalability within a large, enterprise-level design system
• Align visual decisions with existing system guidelines
• Collaborate with cross-functional design and development teams

Visual Designer — Design System Support
I collaborated with the core design system team to refine visual components, improve consistency across UI elements, and support enhancements within an established design framework. My work focused on visual quality, clarity, and alignment with system standards rather than redefining foundational architecture.

Process
**System Review & Alignment**
Reviewed existing components, visual tokens, and usage patterns to understand system structure and constraints.

**Component Refinement**
Supported the refinement of key UI components, including buttons, cards, form elements, and layout patterns, ensuring visual consistency and usability across products.

**States & Variants**
Assisted in improving component states such as hover, active, disabled, and error states to maintain clarity and predictable interactions.

**Cross-Team Collaboration**
Worked closely with designers and developers to align visual updates with technical implementation and system governance.

The design system improvements focused on visual clarity, consistency, and reuse within a large component ecosystem. Enhancements included refined component styling, improved hierarchy, and alignment with established design tokens to support multiple teams and products.

Accessibility considerations were supported by adhering to established WCAG guidelines, including color contrast, typography legibility, and consistent interaction patterns across components.

Results
The visual refinements helped strengthen consistency and clarity across Moderna’s design system, supporting a scalable foundation for multiple products and teams. This experience reinforced the importance of precision, documentation, and collaboration when contributing to large-scale enterprise systems.
